What does microneedling do?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a skin rejuvenation treatment that creates tiny injuries on the surface of the skin with fine needles. In response, the body increases collagen and elastin production making the skin firmer and smoother over time. We can adjust the depth of the SkinPen needles for the varying thickness of the skin in different areas and your desired treatment intensity.
What does microneedling treat?
Microneedling is safe on all skin tones and exposed areas including the face, neck, décolletage, and hands. Women and men choose these treatments to address a variety of concerns, including:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scarring
- Enlarged pores
- Uneven texture
- Dull complexion
We do not recommend microneedling for people with active skin conditions like eczema, acne, or skin infections. It does not correct redness such as rosacea or excess pigment such as freckles and age spots. We can treat these conditions with Halo® and BBL® laser skin treatments.
Can you combine microneedling with PRP?
Yes. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a natural component of the blood that is rich in growth factors. When combined with microneedling in a procedure called the Vampire® Facial, PRP intensifies and speeds up the results.
What should I expect during my microneedling treatment?
Microneedling is an office treatment that takes about 30 minutes to an hour to complete. We prepare the skin with a numbing cream to minimize any discomfort. We will make multiple passes of the SkinPen over the skin to ensure even coverage. Patients often describe the treatment as feeling a bit like sandpaper on the skin. A nourishing hyaluronic acid serum will be applied throughout the process.
What is recovery like after a SkinPen microneedling treatment?
You may return to your regular daily activities right away. Expect your skin to look mildly sunburned for about 24 to 48 hours; although experiences vary between patients and with the depth of treatment. Do not use cleansers, makeup, or lotion on the treated skin for 24 hours to give the tiny holes time to close.
How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, most patients need a series of three to six treatments spaced about four weeks apart.
When will I notice the results?
Your skin may look more radiant soon after your first treatment. The true benefits develop gradually as new collagen is generated over the following three to six months, making the skin smoother and firmer.
How long do the results from SkinPen microneedling last?
Results last about a year. Because the aging process and sun exposure can’t be avoided, we recommend maintenance treatments every six months to a year.
