Emsella® for Urinary Incontinence

Even the simple things in life like sneezing and laughing can cause stress and self-consciousness when you have urinary incontinence. Board-certified OB-GYN Dr. Mareeni Stanislaus offers a non-invasive FDA-cleared urinary incontinence treatment called BTL Emsella at her practice in Templeton. Women who want an effective alternative to medication and surgery enjoy the comfort and peace of mind they gain from these simple office treatments performed while they are fully clothed. Emsella is as easy as sitting in a comfortable chair!

Dr. Stanislaus Says

"Electromagnetic energy restores your body’s natural function, reduces incontinence, and improves pelvic floor strength—while you stay fully clothed."

What causes incontinence?

The pelvic floor muscles serve as a hammock to support the uterus, bladder, urethra, and other organs of the pelvis. While these muscles are initially firm and toned, certain events in life can weaken them leading to urinary incontinence. There are a variety of causes for this lack of bladder control, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Vaginal childbirth
  • Menopause and other hormone fluctuations
  • The natural aging process

During your consultation, we will review your medical history to confirm that your incontinence is caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles and not a medical or neurological condition.

How does Emsella work?

Emsella strengthens the pelvic floor muscles using high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy, much like EMSCULPT® body contouring treatments, emitted through the seat of a specialized chair. The electromagnetic energy causes small pelvic floor contractions, similar to Kegel exercises, that are significantly stronger and faster than possible on your own. A single treatment session creates the equivalent of almost 12,000 Kegels.

With multiple treatments, the pelvic floor muscles will become stronger, more toned, and better able to support the pelvic organs decreasing urinary incontinence.

Is Emsella right for me?

Good candidates for Emsella are women of any age ([link]and men[/link]) whose lives are limited by urinary incontinence that causes any of the following symptoms:

  • A sudden, urgent need to urinate (urge incontinence)
  • Urine leakage when coughing, jogging, laughing, having intercourse, and other actions that put pressure on the bladder (stress incontinence)
  • A combination of stress and urge incontinence

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have an internal mesh, copper IUD, or pacemaker are cannot have Emsella treatments. Dr. Stanislaus can recommend alternative treatments including incontinence surgery for these patients.

Are there other noninvasive treatments for urinary incontinence?

The following noninvasive feminine rejuvenation treatments may be used instead of, or in addition to, Emsella depending on your needs and desired improvements:

  • ThermiVa® tightens the inner and outer labia, vagina, and pelvic floor muscles using radiofrequency (RF) energy.
  • Viveve® improves vaginal tone and treats urinary incontinence using controlled RF energy.

A member of our wellness team will help you determine which treatment or combination will best provide your desired improvements.

What should I expect during my Emsella treatment?

We perform Emsella treatments in our office in just 30 minutes. You will remain fully clothed during your treatment so it’s best to wear comfortable pants or shorts free of metal, including zippers or rivets.

Once you are seated, your provider will start the machine and you will feel tapping followed by tingling and pelvic contractions that gradually become stronger. Many patients say the treatments are very comfortable and even relaxing.

What is recovery like after Emsella?

No downtime is required after the treatment. You may return to your regular daily activities right away.

How many treatments will I need?

The typical treatment protocol includes two 30-minute sessions a week for 3 weeks. Depending on the severity of your incontinence, you may need additional treatments.

When will I notice the results?

While some patients notice a reduction in their symptoms after their first treatment, most experience optimal results a few weeks after their 6th session. It is normal for incontinence to increase slightly the first day or two after the treatment due to pelvic floor muscle fatigue.

How long will my results last?

Once your symptoms are under control, we recommend a follow-up session every 6 to 12 months depending on your age and physical condition.

Does Emsella really work?

Data from the 5 initial published clinical studies confirm 95% of patients report an improved quality of life and 75% reduced their use of pads.
